Problems with Virgin Trains?

The BBC carried a story about Virgin cutting the speed on their revolutionary Pendolino trains in the UK. The high-speed 125mph service began three months ago, but has experienced a few minor braking problems of late, causing Virgin to cut the train speed to 110mph (not a huge reduction). An earlier story carries more details about the problems.

Rail passengers are facing delays after a Virgin train hit the buffers at Liverpool’s Lime Street Station for the second time in a week.

The Pendolino train hit the buffers at platform seven, at lunchtime on Tuesday. It is not thought that anyone was hurt.

An even earlier article has information about the impressive modern trains, and shows just how much Virgin has invested in the technology.

Virgin Trains, which runs the line, has invested around £1bn on a fleet of more than 50 tilting trains.

The new carriages feature airline-style comfort with at seat audio entertainment, an on-board shop and electronic reservation systems.

The space age trains are part of a promise made by Virgin boss Richard Branson to revolutionise rail travel in the UK.

Sir Richard has also noted on many occasions that if something doesn’t work, he has no problem simply redesigning it no matter how much that redesign might cost. It’s one of the true differentiators between the Virgin Way and the "salvage it no matter what" approaches of most other big companies. It’ll be interesting to watch the Pendolino story unfold and see how Virgin handles this latest challenge.
